Knife Wielding Mother Arrested After Confronting Alleged Bullies At Coulwood Middle School

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police say a mother and three juveniles have been arrested following a disturbance on the campus of Coulwood Middle School.

Investigators say police were called to the campus on Kentberry Drive around 8am regarding a woman having a knife on the campus.

Police determined that the mother of a 13-year-old male student followed her son’s bus to the campus due to what she believed to be a bullying incident involving two other 13-year-old students against her son.

The mother reportedly identified the students she believed to be the bullies to school staff.  During this time, police say the mother became verbally irate.  One of the students she identified to staff as being a bully then started assaulting the woman, according to a news release.

The mother is accused of pulling out a knife and flailing it through the air at the two 13-year-old students she thought were bullying her son.

CMS staff was able to gain control of the mother and she put the knife up before a school resource officer arrived.  No injuries were reported during the encounters.

All three 13-year-old students involved have been arrested for public affray.  Two of the students were additionally charged with simple assault for assaulting the woman.

The woman has been identified as Olga Cortez.  She was charged with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of having a weapon on school grounds.
