While You Prepare For More Winter Weather, DOT Crews, Are Doing The Same
IREDELL CO.– DOT crews will start spreading brine on Charlotte city streets Tuesday. The state DOT has been out since Monday treating state roads and interstates in Mecklenburg and other local counties.
While you prepare for the winter weather, DOT crews, are doing the same.
“Right now we’re planning to work a full night shift starting at 6pm tonight and that’s going to run until the duration of the night, so 12 hours on and 12 hours off,” says Iredell County Maintenance Manager Matthew Evans.
It’s not the snow from this winter storm that’s the major concern, it’s the chance of black ice. Which forms quickly and is hard to spot on the road.
NC DOT officials say they have plenty of salt to treat the roadways. Division leaders are in constant communication with each other, and will shift resources if certain counties are in need.
“Everybody tries to work together that way we are aware of the black ice and where it can get treated,” says Evans.
The safest way to avoid black ice, is to stay off the roads if you can.
Evans says Iredell County is ordering salt more often, but in less quantities, compared to previous years.
North Carolina State Troopers will monitor the roads for break downs and people who need help.
