CMPD Releases Dispatch Calls From Last Week’s Officer Involved Shooting At HQ

CHARLOTTE, NC — On Thursday, January 11th officers with the North Tryon Division and members of the N.C. Probation and Parole were briefing in the parking of  CMPD headquarters when a suspect began shooting at officers.

During the incident, officer Casey Shue was struck by gunfire and transported to the hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the leg.

The suspect, Jonathan Bennett, was also wounded during the incident. He was transported to the hospital and later died as a result of his injuries.

Bennett was a suspect wanted in an earlier domestic related homicide which occurred on Carlyle Drive.

Information gathered during the investigation revealed that two CMPD officers and two probation officers fired their weapons during this incident.

The CMPD officers have been identified as Jeffrey Zederbaum and Jared Decker. Officer Decker was hired on July 21, 2014, and is also assigned to the North Tryon Division Crime Reduction Unit.

As is standard procedure with any officer involved shooting, the Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct a separate but parallel investigation to determine whether CMPD policies and procedures were adhered to during the course of the incident. Per department protocol, the officers involved in this case will be placed on administrative assignment.​
