Plan Approved to Add LGBTQ Diversity to CMS Board Policy

CHARLOTTE, NC – Things got heated as CMS leaders approved a plan to add LGBTQ diversity to school board policy.

The changes also include incorporating diversity throughout the district’s curriculum.

The school board vote was 7-2.

Rev. Flip Benham was escorted out by police during the public hearing. It happened after he left the podium and approached board members sitting around the dais.

The existing policy states the board supports educational excellence regardless of race, gender, national origin, or religion.

The change adds several new categories including gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation.

It also calls for CMS to “intentionally incorporate” diversity throughout the district’s curriculum, instruction, and professional development.
Opponents accused the board of imposing values on students in the classroom.

Supporters say it’s important students learn in an environment that respects diversity.
