An Emotional Night As Hundreds Of People Lit Candles To Remember A 19-Year-Old Murder Victim

FORT MILL, SC.– An emotional night as hundreds of people lit candles to remember a 19-year-old murder victim. They packed the parking lot of the Peach Stand in Fort Mill.

Karson Whitesell was shot and killed earlier this week while she worked inside the iconic store. Family and friends are struggling with the senseless crime. WCCB Charlotte spoke to those who knew her best.

“A wonderful big sister a daughter that will be greatly missed,” says Jason Whitesell as he held back tears for the daughter he lost.

“Just thankful that we had 19 years that she was here, and she was our daughter.”

Hundreds held burning candles for the young woman they say was the light in their lives.

“Our daughter was a beautiful person inside and out,” said Karson’s mother, Debbie Whitesell, during the vigil.

Karson’s Pastor from Illumine Church led the vigil.

“Karson had the unique ability to see all the people in the room, not just the people she wanted to but noticed everybody and not leave anybody out,” says Pastor Kent Reeder.

He was her mentor and friend, and says she had a passion for service.

“Karson certainly would say nice things and stuff like that, but loving with actions and in truth, she was very genuine and compassionate person,” says Pastor Kent Reeder.

Karson’s family tells WCCB the only thing getting them through this, is their faith.

“I know that I will be with Karson again one day and having that comfort of the atonement of Christ is overwhelming and I’m very grateful for our Savior,” says Jason Whitesell.

Fort Mill Police have not released a motive for Karson Whitesell’s murder. They have said it is not a case of domestic violence or a robbery attempt.

Christopher Mendez is charged with her murder. He’s begin held without bond. Police say he shot Whitesell multiple times inside the Peach Stand Tuesday afternoon.
