CHARLOTTE, NC — The Charlotte Housing Authority (CHA) is providing full service identity theft protection to at risk employees after a recent data breach obtained employee W-2 information.
The CHA says the breach was discovered Friday, January 19th, following an “email spoofing” attack. Officials say the hacker used an account posing as the CEO and sent a request for employee W-2 information.
Law enforcement, including the IRS, FBI, and Federation of Tax Administrators, was contacted immediately after the discovery. The President and CEO of the CHA, A. Meachem Jr., held a meeting the following Monday to inform employees.
The CHA says all employees who are at risk from the breach have been given two years worth of full service LifeLock Identity Theft Protection as a precaution.
