Deputies Identify Two Suspects Arrested In Deadly Catawba County Robbery Attempt

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A robbery gone bad left one teen dead after a shootout in Catawba County Wednesday evening.

Investigators say 17-year-old Shane Cauthen was shot while he and two other suspects were attempting to rob a teen at his home on Fairview Drive.

Sheriff Coy Reid says that Cauthen, Dylan Gates, 16, and Cory Ingram, 22, went to Fairview Drive with the intention of robbing a 17-year-old resident at the home. Gunfire was exchanged, and Cauthen was hit by the intended victim of the robbery.

Deputies found Cauthen around 6:10pm in a vehicle stopped on the side of the road in the area of Startown Road and Blackburn Bridge Road. He was taken to CMC Lincoln, where he was later pronounced dead.

Reid says the robbery victim, who has not been identified, will not face homicide charges related to Cauthen’s death.

Officials say Dylan Gates and Cory Ingram were both arrested Friday and charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon.

The investigation is ongoing.
