Lawmakers Could Try And Break Apart The State’s Largest School Districts, Including CMS
CHARLOTTE, NC — North Carolina lawmakers may be setting the stage to break apart the state’s biggest school districts. That includes Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
Critics say a plan like this could lead to re-segregation.
A joint committee in the general assembly will start studying the idea next week. Republican representatives Bill Brawley and John Bradford from Mecklenburg County sponsored the bill that set up that committee.
Supporters of dividing districts say the state should look at the most effective size for school systems. Opponents say breaking apart large districts like CMS and Wake County could have grave consequences.
The committee will report back May 1st on whether to recommend passing legislation to let previously merged school districts be divided.
