Early Morning Accident Leaves One Person Dead, Two Injured

CHARLOTTE, NC — Police are trying to determine whether speed and alcohol may have led to a deadly accident early Monday morning.

CMPD says 27-year-old Jesse Wells was killed shortly before 7am in west Charlotte after colliding with another vehicle on Little Rock Road near Freedom Drive. According to investigators, Wells crossed the median into oncoming traffic, lost control and was hit in the driver side door area by Tanya Clawson.

Wells was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials say Clawson, 43, and her 16-year-old son were taken to CMC-Huntersville with minor injuries.

Both parties were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. Investigators are still trying to determine if speed played a role in the crash, and whether alcohol was a factor for Wells.

CMPD says alcohol was not a factor on the part of Clawson.

The investigation is ongoing.
