CMPD: Monday’s Alleged East Charlotte Kidnapping Was Not A Kidnapping
The Latest
CMPD now says the kidnapping of a 7-year-old girl in east Charlotte Monday following a dispute was not actually a kidnapping. 37-year-old Jesus Rodriguez is facing multiple charges related to the altercation between himself and the girl’s mother, but kidnapping is not among them.
According to investigators, Denisse Ramirez-Sola was waiting in her car on Casa Lynda Lane to pick up her daughter from the school bus when she and Rodriguez got into an argument over photos on her phone. Sola’s sister arrived in the car with Rodriguez to pick up her own children, but eventually got into the vehicle with her sister.
Sola told police that Rodriquez eventually began demanding her phone and hitting her windows with a handgun. Sola also accused Rodriguez of pointing the gun at her and verbally threatening her at one point.
The two sisters then fled the scene right as the children were arriving on the bus, police say.
Not wanting to leave the kids unattended, Rodriguez gathered them into his vehicle. Police say at no point did he kidnap the kids, force them into his vehicle, or threaten them with a weapon.
Around 3:48pm, Rodriguez met Sola and her sister at a QT on The Plaza. The sister returned to Rodriguez’s vehicle with the phone, and they drove off.
Police say Sola reported her daughter being kidnapped at that time.
Rodriguez’s vehicle was located on Eastway Drive at Kilbourne shortly after 5pm, but police say he refused to stop. After a brief pursuit, Rodriguez and Sola’s sister were both detained and the children were recovered from the vehicle. Investigators say a handgun was also found in the vehicle at that time.
Interviews later revealed that the sisters would often look after each other’s children, including picking them up from the bus stop. CMPD says the incident did not then meet the criteria for a kidnapping given the circumstances.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and DSS has been called to assist.
Jesus Rodriguez is charged with Assault by Pointing a Gun, Communicating Threats, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession of Heroin, Felony-Flee to Elude and Driving while License Revoked.
