Salvation Army Divisional Headquarters of NC, SC Says An Employee Embezzled Nearly $230K

CHARLOTTE, NC — Police are investigating after an employee with the Salvation Army allegedly embezzled nearly $230,000 in funds.

An official with the Salvation Army Divisional Headquarters in Charlotte reported the alleged embezzlement to police Friday afternoon. According to a police report, the employee is accused of stealing $229,853.70 over a period of two years.

The Salvation Army released a statement Tuesday morning regarding the incident.

“On Friday, February 16, 2018 The Salvation Army of North and South Carolina filed a police report stating money was taken by an employee at The Salvation Army Divisional Headquarters of North and South Carolina. The Salvation Army is fully cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation.

The Salvation Army does not tolerate financial misconduct or improprieties among its officers, employees, or volunteers. All Salvation Army units, including The Salvation Army’s Divisional Headquarters, undergo regular audits for the purpose of maintaining financial accountability. Such audits allow us to uncover cases of financial wrongdoing and turn the person responsible for it over to the authorities.

The Salvation Army is fully insured; therefore, none of the monies entrusted to The Salvation Army was lost. This theft will not impact services of The Salvation Army in any of our North and South Carolina locations.”

Officials say the incident only impacts the Salvation Army Divisional Headquarters located in Charlotte, and the Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte is not impacted or involved in any way.
