CMS Officials Do Not Want Their Teachers Having Guns

CHARLOTTE, NC.– President Trump says it’s worth looking into having teachers with military experience or special training carry concealed guns, but CMS officials, are not on the same page.

In the wake of the Florida school shooting– the topic of conversation: change. Not everyone can agree on how.

President Trump is calling for solutions, like giving bonuses to teachers who undergo gun training. Charlotte Mecklenburg School Board member Elyse Dashew says there are better solutions. Like adding school counselors, psychologists and social workers.

“I think that what we need to do to keep our children safe, is to beef up our social and emotional support in our schools,” says Dashew.

A CMS spokesperson tells WCCB: “The superintendent is opposed to arming teachers. CMS is exploring options to strengthen security in schools across the district.”

Victoria Johnson has two children in CMS. Like most parents WCCB talked to, she thinks having armed teachers is not a good idea.

“If you just put guns out there for kids to potentially have access,” says Johnson.

WCCB also talked to a woman who was a teaching assistant in CMS for 12 years. She did not want to be identified, but says she does not have a problem with it.

“I’m all for protection. You know I’m by myself and I have a concealed carry permit, and if I was threatened, I would use it.”

Dashew says many teachers have a different view.

“Most teachers I’ve heard from would quit if that was the environment, if that’s where we’re headed. That they would quit and leave the profession.”
