Juvenile Arrested For Social Media Threat Targeting York Middle School

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — A juvenile was arrested Wednesday evening for making a social media threat targeting York Middle School.

According to the York Police Department, at about 8:20 Wednesday night, a man called the York Police and stated that his son had read a post referring to a threat to a school in the York School District.

The reporting officer told his supervisors and a school resource officer, who was able to identify the juvenile who posted the threat.

The resource officer along with assistance from the York county Sheriff’s Office and Homeland Security went to the juvenile’s house.  Once it was confirmed that the juvenile had made the post, the juvenile was arrested and taken to a juvenile detention center.

The York Police Department says there is no credible threat that students or parents should be concerned about regarding this incident.

York School District One released the following statement in regards to the incident:

“Wednesday evening local law enforcement was made aware of a threat posted on social media and directed toward York Middle School by a juvenile student in York School District One.  A multi-jurisdictional team of law enforcement went to the juvenile’s home Wednesday night, confirmed the post originated from the residence, and placed the juvenile under arrest for making threats on a school.

Law enforcement and school district officials want to assure our community that at no point was York Middle School or any other YSD1 school in danger from this individual. We continue to encourage parents to monitor their children’s social media and messaging accounts and report anything suspicious or dangerous to the school or law enforcement.

We remind you that we take all threats seriously and continue to work alongside law enforcement to investigate possible threats. As we’ve said before, a strength of our school district is our community, and this community can work together to keep all children safe.”
