POLKTON, NC — An inmate at the Lanesboro Correctional Institution is facing assault charges after attacking two guards with a homemade weapon in February.
The incident happened around 7:44pm on February 20th. Officials say the inmate “lunged and slashed” a corrections officer with a homemade weapon after being asked to leave another inmate’s cell.
NCDPS says another guard was also injured while helping subdue the inmate.
Both guards were treated at a local medical facility. Officials say one guard was treated with stitches, and both were released with non-life threatening injuries.
“It’s unfortunate that our two staff members were assaulted while carrying out their duties. This is an example of the increasing challenges our correctional officers face with the more violent inmate population,” says Director of Prisons Kenneth Lassiter. “As we continue our efforts to improve safety in our facilities, we must be mindful that our correctional officers continue to face challenges while working daily to protect the public and preserve order within prison facilities.”
The inmate is facing additional assault charges related to the incident, according to officials. The inmate has not been identified.
