Alcohol Use Suspected In Fatal Crash In West Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — CMPD is investigating a fatal wreck that happened Sunday night in west Charlotte.  Investigators say Calvin Smartt III was driving his Honda Civic on Brookshire Boulevard between Hovis Road and Lawton Road when he drove off the road and went down an embankment.

Smartt was pronounced dead on the scene.  Police say their initial investigation revealed that Smartt was traveling at a high rate of speed and crossed the median into the oncoming lanes of traffic before traveling off the roadway and down the embankment.

The vehicle then struck a concrete barrier and a fence.  Police say Smartt was ejected from the vehicle.  He was not wearing a seatbelt, according to a news release.  Police also believe alcohol was a contributing factor in this accident.
