South Charlotte Neighbors Upset About Deer Hunting Near Homes & Apartments

CHARLOTTE, NC – More than a year after discovering evidence of illegal bow hunting, South Charlotte neighbor Adam Hansil says the problem is back.

“I think he felt the heat. He took everything down. But now it’s all back up again,” Hansil says.

A deer stand, deer blinds, and now a spotlight in a patch of woods that backs up to his apartment near Carmel Road and Highway 51.

“It looks far, but it’s only actually about 300 yards that way,” Hansil explains.

Neighbors have seen deer that have been hit by arrows running through their yards.

Hansil is worried for his neighbor’s safety and for his tan and white dog Zoey, who he thinks could be mistaken for a deer.

It’s illegal to hunt with a bow and arrow or with a gun within Charlotte city limits.

Sgt. William Laton with the NC Wildlife Commission says it still happens though.

And evidence isn’t enough.

“What we need to do is find that person actually in the act hunting. And then we can charge them accordingly,” Laton says.

And while he says most hunters do things legally, illegal hunting is an issue in Charlotte.

“The people that are hunting in areas like Charlotte where it’s strictly prohibited are the people that need to be caught,” Laton says.

Hansil says he spoke with a wildlife officer who told him they are actively investigating.

“He said it’s on the radar now. So I’m more hopeful than last time,” Hansil says.
