Light-Rail Extension To UNCC Officially Opens

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Blue Line light-rail extension running from uptown to UNC Charlotte is officially open.

The $1.1 billion project was funded by the City of Charlotte, the state of North Carolina, and the federal government.

The entire light-rail route is now 18.9 miles long.Β  The extension is expected to add 18,000 daily riders to the existing 15,000 weekday passengers.

The Blue Line will now have a total of 26 stations and 11 park-and-ride lots. There are four park-and-ride lots along the extension, with 3,100 spaces. The lots are located at Sugar Creek Road, Old Concord Road, J.W. Clay Boulevard, and University City Boulevard.

The Old Concord and Sugar Creek lots will be free to park in.Β Β People riding the light-rail can park in the J.W. Clay Boulevard and University City Boulevard lots for free if they have a daily, weekly, or monthly pass.Β  Β A one-way, roundtrip or 10 ride pass cannot be used to exit the deck for free.
