New CMS Digital Tool To Increase Transparency

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has launched a new digital dashboard that will allow students, staff, families and the public to review academic progress at schools.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Performance Dashboard was unveiled at the regular meeting of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education on March 27.

“We believe this is a critical tool in our efforts to engage families and the public in the work of educating our children,” said Superintendent Dr. Clayton Wilcox. “This dashboard allows parents and the public to see the progress at individual schools, while still protecting the privacy of individual students and teachers.”

The dashboard provides information about enrollment, race and ethnicity, gender and school performance overall, as well as broken out by level (elementary, middle and high). It offers easy access to data about graduation rates, test scores, absenteeism and student incidents. It also offers a range of filters that allow comparisons of individual schools and of performance over time.

The dashboard is part of the district’s efforts to improve school quality. The district’s recent report, called Breaking the Link, shows that race and poverty are directly linked to academic performance. The report, released in February, suggests that improvement can be achieved by focusing on three levers that the district can control: time in school, excellence in teaching and access to rigor.

By providing access to academic results, the dashboard will allow engagement in schools and help keep the public informed about the performance of public schools.

“Everyone has access to this dashboard,” Dr. Wilcox said. “We want to be transparent and we encourage everyone – families, the public and our employees – to use it to learn about our schools.”

The dashboard can be accessed from the main page of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools website. It can be accessed directly here.
