Huntersville Doctor Sentenced After Pleading Guilty To Child Pornography Charges

CHARLOTTE, NC — A Huntersville Oncologist will spend close to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to possessing child pornography back in July 2017.

David Michael Shope, 43, was sentenced to 105 months in prison Wednesday, followed by 15 years of supervised released and sex offender registration.

According to officials, in February and September 0f 2015 Shope used peer-to-peer software to share multiple videos showing children being sexually abused with an undercover CMPD detective. A search of Shope’s Huntersville home later revealed multiple electronic devices containing videos of child pornography, officials say, and instances of sadomasochistic conduct.

Some of the children seen in the videos were also under the age of 12, according to detectives.

Court records say Shope also entered public chat rooms claiming to be a woman with a younger female daughter, and was sexually interested in other women with younger female daughters. On several occasions, investigators say Shope asked for photos of the women and their daughters.

Shope is currently in federal custody and awaiting assignment to a federal correctional facility.
