A 6-Year-Old Is Holding On To Life After A Fire Broke Out At West Charlotte Apartment Complex
CHARLOTTE, NC.– A 6-year-old is holding on to life after a fire broke out a West Charlotte apartment complex. That child’s mother and cousin died in the hospital.
On Sunday,
Tomaceeta Hampton received a horrifying call that her daughter, 23-year-old Mechele Morrison, her grandson 6-year-old Tremayne Smith and cousin 9-year-old Michael Johnson were rushed to the hospital after a fire broke out at their apartment at Rose Thorn Place.
“She was a beautiful girl. Inside and out. She loved her son she loved Michael. Oh God. She was the best,” says Hampton through tears.
Michael died on Monday, his cousin Mechele passed away not long after. Mechele’s sister, Enchantis Mills, telling WCCB she feels numb.
“I know she loved me and she knew I loved her you know my nephew definitely,” says Mills.
Fire investigators say the fire was accidental and started from unattended cooking. As more than 36 fire fighters worked to put out the blaze, nothing was left. Hampton says the only thing getting her through is her grandson, Tremayne, who will be taken off breathing tubes tomorrow.
“Everything right now is for him. He’s going to come home and I have to be strong we all have to be strong,” says Hampton.
Mechele’s mother says Mechele didn’t have any insurance, so they don’t have money to give her a proper burial. Her grandson, Tremayne’s clothes were all lost in the fire too.
