3 Charged After Traffic Stop Where Officers Say One Suspect Reached For A Machete, Asked To Be Shot
CHARLOTTE, NC — Police say a suspect was tasered during a traffic stop Friday night after reaching for a machete and screaming for the officers to shoot him.
The incident happened around 8pm on McAlway Road after officers pulled over a white Toyota Sienna. Officers say they smelled marijuana and noticed a machete inside while approaching the vehicle.
The driver, 23-year-old Marlon Lomax, admitted to officers that he didn’t have a license, and was detained without incident after being asked to step out of the vehicle.
Officials say the front passenger, 20-year-old Zsa’quan Deshawn Maurice Burris, initially refused to exit the vehicle and then tried to run when he did. He was quickly arrested after a brief foot chase.
The backseat passenger, 35-year-old Timothy Quintyne, refused to exit, according to police, and reached for the machete while yelling at officers to shoot him. CMPD says the officers tasered Quintyne and took him into custody.
Quintyne was transported to the hospital for treatment, and will be charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Resist/Obstruct/Delay, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, and Open Container after his release.
Burris has been charged with Possession with Intent to Sell and Distribute Marijuana, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Resist/Obstruct/Delay, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
Lomax was charged with Driving While License Revoked, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, and Possession of a Stolen Firearm.
Police say two handguns located under the seat had been stolen during vehicle break-ins in Charlotte last year. Marijuana, digital scales, an open bottle of alcohol, and $619 in cash were also seized during the vehicle search.
