CHARLOTTE, NC — This Friday will mark the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting, and students across the country plan to participate in a national school walkout to protest gun violence. Ten schools throughout the Charlotte area are scheduled to participate.
School walkouts across the nation have become more prevalent following the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in February. 17 people were killed in the shooting, and 17 more were injured.
The walkouts have become a way for students to voice their frustrations and raise awareness among elected officials about the need for change in gun law legislation.
The walkouts on Friday, April 20th will take place at 10am. The following Charlotte area schools, according to the #NationSchoolWalkout website, have signed up to participate:
- Myers Park High School
- Carmel Christian School
- Stuart W. Cramer High School
- Tega Cay Elementary
- Saint Anne Catholic High School
- Central Cabarrus High School
- Cuthbertson’s High School
- Davidson Green School
- Highland School of Technology
