International Champions Cup Charlotte Celebration | PHOTOS

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A party was held in Uptown Charlotte Thursday to celebrate the return of the International Champions Cup to the Queen City. Liverpool FC and Borussia Dortmund will play each other at Bank of America Stadium on Sunday, July 22nd.

Charlotte held one of the soccer games as part of the International Champions Cup for 3 consecutive years, beginning in 2014 when Liverpool first visited the Queen City and beat AC Milan 2-0. However, Charlotte was not one of the cities to host the International Champions Cup in 2017.

The celebration took place at Romare Bearden Park. City officials and members from the International Champions Cup organizers – Relevent, were in attendance, but the special guests were two European soccer legends representing each of the visiting teams.

Sami Hyypia is a Finnish football manager and former defender who played for Liverpool between 1999 and 2009, making 318 appearances for the club and was part of Liverpool’s Champions League winning team in 2005. Patrick Owomoyela is a German footballer who played for Borussia Dortmund between 2008 and 2013, making 76 appearances for the club and was part of Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga championship-winning squad in the 2010-11 season.

Massive Liverpool fan, Wilson was also on hand. Check out Wilson’s video of when he got to meet Sami Hyypia and Patrick Owomoyela here!
