A Man Accused Of Torching A Corvette And Trying To Burn A Pride Flag In West Charlotte Is Out Of Jail On Bond

CHARLOTTE, NC.– A man accused of torching a Corvette and trying to burn a Pride flag in West Charlotte is out of jail on bond. CMPD does not think this was a hate crime, but detectives do think the suspect was targeting someone.

WCCB learned the Corvette belongs to the roommate of a woman who says she went out with the suspect just last week. That’s not all. Police say a second case is now believed to be connected.

Sapphire Ashley grabbed drinks with 21-year-old Jackson Brooks last week. Now he’s charged with burning personal property.

CMPD says Brooks is the man seen in surveillance video torching Seth Headley’s car in the driveway of his West Charlotte home early Wednesday. The same man tries to light a Gay Pride flag on fire. Headley and Ashley are roommates. She says she hadn’t talked to Brooks since last week.

“No social media connection, no phone calls, no nothing. And then 4:30 in the morning he’s at my house setting my best friend’s car on fire,” says West Charlotte resident Sapphire Ashley.

Headley feared it was a hate crime. CMPD detectives say that’s not likely. Ashley’s not sure.

“When he came to pick me up, he asked what was under tarp, he was curious, and I said oh it’s my best friend’s classic Corvette. I thought it was just an innocent question.”

Investigators believe Brooks set fire to another car the same morning at a house 13 miles away. They say Brooks knows that person too. Detectives are not sure about a motive.
