Dozens Protest Against Sexual Education In “Sex Ed Sit Out” Rally

CHARLOTTE, NC — Dozens of people protesting against sexual education in North Carolina schools, rallied in Uptown Monday. It’s part of a grassroots movement started by moms on social media called “Sex Ed Sit Out.”

About 50 protesters were here holding signs that said things like “let kids be kids”. Those protesters are troubled by what they call “graphic nature of current sexual education resources in schools.” A spokesperson for Sexual Health Initiatives for Teens says the “Sex Ed Sit Out” movement is  misinformed what’s actually being taught in North Carolina schools.

Several speakers including national conservative blogger Elizabeth Johnston led the “Sex Ed Sit Out” rally.

Executive Director of North Carolina Values Coalition Tami Fitzgerald was there too.

“To protest the graphic, gender bending, promiscuity promoting sex-ed that is being introduced and promoted in public schools across the country,” says Fitzgerald.

Spokeswoman for North Carolina Sexual Health Initiatives for Teens Elizabeth Finley says there’s a lot of misconceptions about how sex education is taught in North Carolina schools. She says students are taught medically accurate information on abstinence, birth control and reducing sexually transmitted infections.

“Very often when you hear students are learning about, say for example condoms. Lots of schools approach that with a PowerPoint slide that has a picture of a condom in a wrapper and a description about how effective condoms,” says Finley.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools allows parents to opt-out of sex-ed classes. Finley says parents can also see any materials that are being provided in schools.
