Garinger High Student, Two Others Charged In East Charlotte Man’s Murder

CHARLOTTE, NC — A 15-year-old juvenile arrested for bringing a gun to Garinger High School Monday is now a suspect in the murder of an east Charlotte man Friday afternoon.

CMPD says the teen was arrested earlier this morning by the School Resource Officer. According to reports, the teen was in possession of a handgun and stolen vehicle at the time of his arrest.

Police also arrested another 15-year-old juvenile Monday morning, along with 17-year-old Tavone Smith in connection to Friday’s murder.

Smith is charged with Murder, Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, and Conspiracy to Commit Armed Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon. Both juveniles are each charged with Murder, Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, Conspiracy to Commit Murder, and Conspiracy to Commit Armed Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon.

The names of the juveniles are not being released due to their age.

The shooting happened around 4:48pm Friday at an apartment complex on Wembley Drive. Officers say they were called to investigate an accident reported in the area, but instead located 26-year-old Eskinder Dawit Asefaw with gunshot wounds.

Asefew was taken to CMC with life threatening injuries, and was pronounced dead Saturday morning.
