Officials: No Injuries, No Evacuations After Norfolk Southern Train Derails In York County

FORT MILL, SC — Investigators are trying to figure out what caused a train to derail late Friday afternoon in York County.

Sixteen freight cars carrying frozen goods and fertilizer came off the track behind a residential area on Maple Street and overturned around 4pm.

York County Emergency Management says no one was injured, and no hazardous materials were spilled.

The derailment has closed several trails along the Anne Close Springs Greenway, but roadways are not affected.

The derailment is also not expected to impact the city’s Strawberry Festival, and officials say events are currently scheduled to go on as planned.

Norfolk Southern says the train consisted of 85 rail cars and two locomotives. County officials say the train company is responsible for the cleanup.
