UNC Charlotte Classmates & Sorority Sisters Hold Vigil for Polly Rogers
CHARLOTTE, NC – An emotional evening for family and friends of a UNC Charlotte sophomore who died after falling out of a party bus. Members of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority held a vigil for 20-year-old Polly Rogers.
“She was such a fun loving, sweet, sweet soul,” says sorority sister Alexis Burns.
Police say Rogers fell out of an emergency window on a Charlotte Party Charters bus Tuesday night.
Two cars hit her, police are still searching for one of the drivers.
“She had such a fun spirit. And was so sarcastic and just witty, and loved to laugh, and loved to make people smile,” Burns says.
Sunday night, her classmates described her as a fun-loving free spirit, who lived in the moment.
“If Polly had one thing to tell you all, it would be to cherish your friends and your passions. Lift each other up, go after what you believe in, and never hold back,” one of her classmates told the crowd.
The Myers Park High School graduate was studying special education.
Friends say they’ll remember her kindness and how she treated others.
“She kept an Expo marker in her bathroom and would write notes on her mirror late at night. ‘Good luck on your test. You’ll do amazing,'” Rogers’ roommate said.
Meanwhile, the investigation continues into what happened Tuesday night.
Sources say the Kappa Sigma fraternity rented the party bus and the local chapter has been suspended.
According to a police report, people were drinking alcohol on the bus. It doesn’t say whether Rogers was one of them.
“She is so much more than, ‘girl that fell out a bus,’ she is a beautiful human. And, she should be remembered as that,” Burns says.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Monday afternoon at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Carmel Road.
It starts at 2:00.
