Original Story:

BESSEMER CITY, NC – We’re learning more about a man who rammed an SUV into a Bessemer City restaurant, with his family inside, killing his daughter. Police say Roger Self killed her and another person, plus injured several others. And investigators say many of the victims are law enforcement.

Self is now locked up in the Gaston County Jail, charged with two counts of First Degree Murder.

Investigators want to know what led him to plow the SUV into the Surf and Turf Lodge in Bessemer City just after noon Sunday.

His Daughter, 26-year-old Gaston County Sheriff’s Deputy Katelyn Self was killed, along with another person.

“Tragic, tragic loss of life and all I’d ask of people is to keep the family in your prayers and also the Sheriff’s Office, because we’re suffering a little bit right now,” said Gaston County Sheriff Alan Cloninger.

Police say the act appears intentional. Members of his family were sitting at a table. Investigators say several people at that table, and others, were taken to the hospital with injuries.

“This involves us all, this touches the agencies that the Sheriff mentioned. One of the victims is a Gaston County Police Officer. One of the victims is a Gastonia Police Officer,” said Bessemer City Police Chief Thomas Ellis Jr.

The suspect, Self, is well-known as a private investigator in Gaston County and also has a background in law enforcement.

He also owns an event venue business in Dallas called Venue 1241.

“We are a city with a heart. And I think you will see that working together. I think you will see a lot of good teamwork together to get some justice brought to this case,” Ellis said.
