CMPD Spouses Respond To Councilwoman’s Controversial Tweet

CHARLOTTE, NC — Spouses of CMPD officers are showing their support for police after controversial tweets from a Charlotte City Councilwoman.

Anne steppe, the wifeof a CMPD officer says, “We, the citizens of Charlotte, especially those in law enforcement, we will not turn a blind eye either when members of our city council speak out so egregiously against officers that risk their lives to protect those that live and work in the Queen City.”

Nearly a dozen spouses showed up at the city council meeting Wednesday night in response to Councilwoman Lawana Mayfield’s controversial tweet.

In March, Mayfield tweeted, “Being black in America under #45 has created homegrown terrorist wearing blue uniforms.”

That tweet has gotten a lot of attention in the past few weeks. Wives of CMPD officers say it crossed the line.

Tia Smith says, “To say the word terrorist in the world we’re living in where there really is terrorism, I’m blown away that a woman can keep her seat on our city council with such a comment coming out of her mouth.”

Some of the CMPD spouses say they want Mayfield to step down, while others want an apology.

Mayfield said in follow up tweets that she is one of the strongest supporters of law enforcement.
