Woman Struck By Car While Searching For Friend In East Charlotte Neighborhood

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A woman was fatally struck by a car while she was searching for a friend on foot in an east Charlotte Neighborhood early Saturday morning.

CMPD officers were called around 2:30 a.m. to the 5300 block of Camp Steward Road at Stewarts Crossing Drive where pedestrian Agnes Amponsah had been struck and a 2012 Hyundai Sonata with damage to the grill, hood and windshield.

Medic pronounced Amponsah dead on scene. The driver of the Hyundai, 19-year-old Tiffany Hinson, and the front seat passenger, 19-year-old Cameron Rivers, were uninjured in the crash.

Police say Amponsah was with her brother, Francis Amponsah, and a friend, Hilda Amoah. They were reportedly using illegal narcotics at their residence nearby.  Amoah left the residence in her vehicle and called a short time later stating she was lost in the neighborhood.  Amponsah and Francis left on foot to search for Amoah.

Amoah’s abandoned vehicle was located on Stewart’s Crossing Drive still running.  She was located nearby and was exhibiting irrational impaired behavior and ran away from Amponsah and her brother.  They pursued Amoah on foot onto Camp Steward Road.

Amponsah ran directly into the path of the Hyundai Sonata that was traveling northwest on Camp Stewart Road.  She was struck and thrown to the pavement, coming to rest in the southeast lane of travel.  Hinson immediately stopped her vehicle to render aid to her.  Amoah ran to the Hyundai and forcibly entered the vehicle and got into the back seat.  She grabbed the front seat passenger, Rivers, around his neck from behind and instructed Hinson to drive away.  The Hyundai fled the scene on Camp Stewart Road towards Harrisburg Road.

Francis remained with Amponsah and called 911.  The Hyundai turned right onto Harrisburg Road and continued to the traffic circle at Cambridge Commons Drive.  Hinson stopped the car refusing to drive any further and insisted that they return to the crash scene.  Amoah exited the Hyundai and ran into the wooded area.  The driver and passenger returned to the scene of the crash uninjured.

A short time later, Hickory Grove Division officers located Amoah on Harrisburg Road near the intersection of Cambridge Commons Drive.  She assaulted an officer and was subsequently subdued by the deployment of a Conducted Electrical Weapon (TASER) and taken into custody.  Hickory Grove Division supervisors and detectives responded to the scene to conduct a separate investigation into the officers’ use of force and criminal charges on Amoah.

Police say excessive speed and alcohol are not contributing factors for Hinson who was driving the Hyundai.

The crash remains under investigation. Any person who witnessed the crash or has information about the case is asked to call Detective Oberer at 704- 432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
