Charlotte Independence Score Last Minute Goal To Draw

MATTHEWS, N.C. — In front of a record crowd this past Saturday night, the Charlotte Independence turned an apparent loss into a tied game against rival Southern Derby team Charleston Battery.

Rookie midfielder Mutaya Mwape of the Charlotte Independence, a United Soccer League professional team, scored his first professional goal in the 79th minute to tie the game.

Midfielder Kotaro Higashi of the Charleston Battery was quick to score in the 25th minute of the game with an assist from Ataulla Guerra. Both goals remained empty for the rest of the half.

The Independence have played three games within the past 7 days, with this one drawing the largest single-game, regular-season crowd to date. They are scheduled to face off against the Richmond Kickers on the road Saturday, June 23rd. Kickoff is at 7:00 PM EST.
