Parents Billed After Kid Topples $132k Statue
The incident happened during a wedding reception held at a community center owned by the city of Overland Park, Kansas.
Security camera footage shows the boy touch the sculpture before it topples down to the floor.
The boy wasn’t hurt, but the statue was damaged beyond repair.
The boy’s mom says she was shocked when she learned about the artwork’s hefty price tag.
“Maybe this is like 800 or something,” said Sarah Goodman. “No it’s a S132,000.”
The boy’s family received a letter from the City of Overland Park’s insurance provider that claimed the child’s parents were negligent because they were not properly monitorig the boy.
But the boy’s parents are now questioning the safety of the display.
“It’s in the main walkway, not a separate room not Plexiglas, not protected, not held down,” Sarah Goodman said.
The spokesperson for the city said the sculpture was never meant to be touched.
Sean Reilly said, “There’s a societal responsibility that you may not interact with it. If it’s not designed interaction.”
Overland Park officials say they don’t plan to bill the boy’s family and are letting both party’s insurance companies work it out.
