Three Arrested After Car Collides With CMPD Patrol Car In Northeast Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Three people are arrested after a car collided with a CMPD patrol car in northeast Charlotte on Thursday.

Around 2:45 p.m., a Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department K-9 Officer carried out a traffic stop on a car that matched the description of the suspect car used in an armed robbery which had occurred earlier in the day.

When the officer initiated the traffic stop, the suspect vehicle pulled into the driveway of a residence and one of the passengers ran from the car.  The suspect vehicle then drove away from the residence and a vehicle pursuit began.  A few minutes later, when the suspects turned onto Sugar Creek Road from The Plaza, both of the remaining two occupants also fled on foot.  The suspect vehicle, which was then unoccupied, continued rolling forward and collided with a marked CMPD patrol car who had responded to assist.

The officer driving the patrol car was not injured.

All three suspects involved were apprehended.

Police have charged 26-year-old Obrian Smith with Operate a Motor Vehicle while Fleeing to Elude, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Displaying a Fictitious Registration Number Plate, Speeding, Reckless Driving, Alter/Remove a Serial Number on a Firearm
and Driving While License Revoked. Smith was also served with 3 counts of Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon (Gaston County warrants -Gastonia Police Department), Larceny of a Motor Vehicle (Gaston County warrant), Assault on a Female (Gaston County warrant), Possession of a Firearm by Convicted Felon (Gaston County), Felony Probation Violation (Mecklenburg County warrant) and Driving while License Revoked (Mecklenburg County warrant).

Police have charged 30-year-old David Chambers is being charged with the following 3 crimes for his involvement in this incident:  Resist/Obstruct/Delay, Alter/Remove a Serial Number on a Firearm, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.  In addition, Chambers was served with the following unrelated warrants for his arrest: Armed Robbery (Gaston County), Larceny of a Motor Vehicle (Gaston County), Identity Theft, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Driving while License Revoked.

Terry Hatten, 31, is being charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and Alter/Remove a Serial Number on a Firearm.

A handgun was located inside of the suspect vehicle and seized.

Smith and Hatten were interviewed by Detectives from the Gastonia Police Department.  They were then transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail and turned over to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.   Chambers had been injured during a fall when he ran from the vehicle.  After being treated at a hospital, he was also transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Jail.

All three suspects were not charged for the robbery that the K-9 officer initially attempted to pull them over for.
