CMPD Says New Strategy To Stop Neighborhood Crime Is Working

CHARLOTTE, NC.– CMPD is changing its strategy to stop neighborhood crime this summer. Police say the arrest of a teenager in Northwest Charlotte shows their strategy is working.

Summer is a busy time for CMPD, officers say they see an uptick in crime. That’s why they’re expanding their summer crime initiative. Officers will work overtime and monitor neighborhoods undercover.

17-year-old Antonio Jackson is charged in a string of home break-ins in the Riverbend neighborhood off Rozzelles Ferry Road in the Mountain Island Lake area. Residents say he lives in the neighborhood.

“Apprehended him while doing a 6th break in on the 23rd and ended up charging him with all six incidents,” says CMPD Captain Ryan Kendall.

One of those break-ins, at Judy Shamp’s house in the middle of the night.

“Was awoken by that noise. Got up turn the lights on, started hearing some louder noises and started makings some noise. When I came downstairs, I found my door had been kicked in,” says Shamp.

This summer, CMPD has officers focusing on specific crimes in their divisions. Now, the department is expanding the 10-week-initiative to 12 weeks.

“Dedicate them to specifically the neighborhood where they’re not at the mercy of the neighborhood. They can just focus on that trend that was happening at the time,” says Captain Kendall.

Officers will work 15 to 20 hours of overtime during this summer initiative.
