Sheriff Says York County Sergeant Injured In Deadly Ambush Likely Shot By Fellow Officer

The Latest (June 27th):

Investigators say forensic testing determined that a fellow officer shot and injured Sergeant Kyle Cummings during a shootout with a man in York County.

Christian McCall is accused of shooting several officers, killing one, during a domestic disturbance in York County on January 15th.

McCall is facing numerous felony charges including charges for the murder of Detective Mike Doty.

The York County Sheriff’s Office release this information in a news release:

Forensic testing was unable to conclusively establish the identity of the individual that fired the shot that wounded Sergeant Cummings; however, testing eliminated all weapons that were fired during the incident, except for the weapon fired by Lieutenant J.M. Ligon.

Forensic testing was able to definitively determine that Sergeant Randy Clinton, Sergeant Buddy Brown and Detective Mike Doty were struck by rounds fired by McCall.

Sheriff Kevin R. Tolson released this statement:

“During the search for a suspect that had already assaulted his wife and shot Sergeant Clinton, that suspect ambushed several officers with an AK47 assault rifle and a gunfight ensued. In only a matter of seconds, gunfire was exchanged and three officers sustained injuries, as well as the suspect,” said Sheriff Tolson. “While it is likely that the shot that wounded Sergeant Cummings was fired by Lieutenant Ligon, the ultimate responsibility for the attempted murder of Sergeant Cummings rests with Christian Thomas McCall.”

Pursuant to Sheriff’s Office policy, Lieutenant Ligon is currently working an administrative assignment until the conclusion of the internal investigation of the January shooting.

The Latest (March 15th):

Investigators say Christian McCall, the man accused of shooting several officers, killing one, during a domestic disturbance in York County, has been released from the hospital.

McCall was also shot during the encounter and spent weeks in a hospital in Charlotte.  He has been taken into custody by CMPD and is being booked in the Mecklenburg County Jail pending an initial hearing in Superior Court to determine the status of his extradition to South Carolina.

McCall is facing numerous felony charges including charges for the murder of Detective Mike Doty.

McCall’s family released the following statement:

“The family is shocked, saddened, and devastated by the events of January 16, 2018. Our hearts have ached for Officers Mike Doty, Randy Clinton, Buddy Brown, and Kyle Cummings and their families.

The Christian McCall we know is a loving Christian, husband of over 20 years, father of two great kids, son, and brother.

Chris had a successful career in the banking industry–where he was well liked by his co workers. He is also a proud veteran of the US Army.

So, this tragedy, as we know it, was something uncharacteristic of Chris’ past and seemingly promising future.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at CMC and Officers with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for their high level of professionalism and compassion during this difficult situation.

We continue to pray for the recovery of all those impacted.”

Original Story:

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Three York County Sheriff’s deputies and one York Police officer were shot overnight after responding to a domestic violence call.

CMPD was called in to assist in the incident.  Officials say at least three of the deputies involved are being treated at a hospital in Charlotte.  Two of the officers were flown to CMC-main and one officer was taken by ground to CMC-Main.

The deputies/officers have been identified as Sgt. Randy Clinton, Sgt. Buddy Brown, Det. Mike Doty and Sgt. Kyle Cummings.

One of the officers is out of surgery and recovering from his injuries.  All the other officers are either in surgery or currently awaiting surgery.  Det. Mike Doty is in very critical condition.

A GoFundMe account has been established to help support the injured officers with their medical bills and during their recovery. You can click here to offer your support to the wounded officers.

According to the page, the fundraiser is endorsed by the York County Sheriff’s Office, the City of York Police Department and the Law Enforcement Chaplaincy for South Carolina. It is coordinated by Heroes In Blue, a 501c3 nonprofit organization committed to promoting positive police and community relationships through empathy and action and to providing support to the families of fallen officers.

The York County Public Information Officer says all of this started after deputies responded to a domestic violence call around 10 p.m. last night on Farrier Lane.  When deputies arrived on the scene, the suspect, Christian Thomas McCall, 47, had already left on foot, according to officials.  Around 1am, officials say McCall fired shots from near the home, striking a K9 officer who was using a dog to track the suspect.

Officials say McCall also fired shots at a SLED helicopter, striking the helicopter.  No one inside the helicopter was injured.

Deputies say McCall then fired more shots around 3:30am striking three deputies.  McCall was eventually shot and taken into custody.  Officials say McCall is currently at CMC-Main.

Officials say they responded to the same home in 2015 for a domestic disturbance call and McCall was listed as the victim in that incident.  No other information is being released about the suspect at this time.

This is a developing story, stay posted for more information.
