Mecklenburg County Inmate Dies After Being Taken To Hospital

CHARLOTTE, NC — An investigation is underway after a Mecklenburg County inmate died late Thursday night.

34-year-old Jemarcus McIlwaine, an inmate at Jail Central, was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead around 11pm. Officials have not provided any other details on what may have led to his death.

McIlwaine was arrested Wednesday and charged with multiple drug related offenses.

His charges included Trafficking Opium Or Heroin, Maintaining a Vehicle/Dwelling for Controlled Substance, Felony Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Marijuana Up To .5 ounces, Possession with Intent to Manufacture/Sell/Distribute Methamphetamine, Felony Possession SCH I Controlled Substance, and Felony Possession Of Cocaine.

On June 6th, McIlwaine was also arrested for Probation Violation, according to jail records.
