CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man is facing charges after police say he struck and killed a pedestrian late Monday night in east Charlotte.
Officers were sent around 9:30 p.m. to the 2200 block of E. Independence Boulevard near Briar Creek Road where 70-year-old John Wylie had been struck by a car.
Police located Wylie in the center lane of E. Independence Boulevard and a 2016 Hyundai Sonata with front end damage parked on the right shoulder.
Medic pronounced Wylie dead on scene. The driver of the vehicle, 35-year-old Johnny McCorbin, stopped a short distance away from the incident.
Investigators say Wylie was walking on the shoulder of the road when McCorbin’s car drifted over and fatally struck him. Wylie’s family has been notified of his death.
McCorbin was transported to Carolinas Medical Center with minor injuries. He was arrested for misdemeanor death by vehicle and transported to Mecklenburg County Intake Center.
Police say excessive speed may be a factor in the case. Drug and or alcohol use are not factors for McCorbin. It is unknown if the pedestrian was impaired.
The collision shut the road down for several hours.
Anyone who saw the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or Detective Steve Williams at 704-432-2169.
