BURKE COUNTY, NC — A new scam has officials warning residents to be on alert when answering their phones.
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office says a phone scammer has been calling residents and claiming to be a member of the BCSO. The scammer has been known to use names like Sgt. Larry Turner, Deputy Wood, among others.
Officials say the scammer then informs the victim that they have an outstanding legal matter that must be resolved by purchasing a green dot card, sending money, or by some other financial means over the phone. If the victim refuses, the scammer then threatens arrest.
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office says they, nor any other law enforcement agency, would ever attempt to settle a legal matter over the phone by requesting money or asking you to purchase a card for payment.
Anyone who receives a call such as this should hang up immediately.
