Former CMS Security Guard Faces 27 Sex Crime Charges Involving Middle School Student

CHARLOTTE, NC — A former security guard with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is facing multiple charges after police say he sexually assaulted a 13-year-old student on multiple occasions.

Mario McIlwain, 26, was arrested Wednesday after a mother told police her 13-year-old daughter was sexually assaulted by McIlwain multiple times between February and May of this year.

McIlwain, a former Security Guard and Behavioral Management Technician at Alexander Graham Middle School, was served 27 warrants related to the alleged crimes. Charges include nine counts of Sex Act by Custodian, seven counts of Statutory Rape, two counts of Statutory Sex Offense, and nine counts of Indecent Liberties with a Child.

Officials say the victim was a student at the school when and where the crimes occurred.

CMS says McIlwain was fired Wednesday, and has only been with the district since February 15, 2018.

The investigation is ongoing. Check back for updates.
