CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Another inmate has died from injuries sustained at Jail Central in Mecklenburg County.  This is the fourth inmate death at the jail this year.

Officials say 52-year-old Jerome Thompson jumped from the second floor of a general housing pod around 10:30pm on July 11th.  He was transported to the hospital and underwent surgery for a skull fracture.  After surgery, Thompson was moved to ICU.  Officials say he died just after 7am on July 12th.

“I am deeply disturbed by the news of a fourth death at our jail this year. This is truly unfortunate and rare. My heart goes out to all of the families. Our chaplain’s unit has been there and will continue to be there for the inmates in our custody and MCSO staff while the investigations continue,” said Mecklenburg County Sheriff Irwin Carmichael.

An investigation is underway. No further details or comments can be provided at this time.
