CHARLOTTE, NC — A 58-year-old man was hit and killed at The Plaza late Monday night.
Officers with CMPD were called around 10 p.m. to the 4400 block of The Plaza near Eastway Drive where pedestrian Barry Mahoney had been struck by a 2008 Honda Accord that had front-end damage.
Medic pronounced Mahoney dead on scene.
As Mahoney walked west to east directly into the path of the Honda Accord, he was hit and thrown onto the windshield of the car. The driver of the Honda, 21-year-old Jimel Tamba, remained at the scene and assisted Mahoney.
Tamba was not injured in the crash and was wearing a seat belt.
Mahoney was not crossing the street at an intersection, and there was no marked crosswalk or electronic pedestrian crossing signals to aid pedestrians crossing in the roadway.
Excessive speed and impairment do not seem to be contributing factors in the crash. No other vehicles were involved.
Tamba was arrested for Driving While License Revoked and No Liability Insurance.
Any person who witnessed the crash or has information about the incident is asked to call Officer Pressley at 704-432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
