MONROE, N.C. — The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the death of an inmate at the Union County Jail.
Monroe Police brought 29-year-old Dustin Kemp Medlin to the Union County Jail around 1:45 a.m. Sunday morning on charges of Possession Of Methamphetamine and Possession Of Drug Paraphernalia.
Authorities say Medlin was temporarily put in a single observation cell and was still in the booking process when the magistrate went to determine the conditions of his release.
During the process, officials say Medlin looked sick and lethargic before being seen by a jail nurse.
Jail Staff requested EMS at approximately 6:15 a.m. due to his condition. He was transported to CMC-Union where he was pronounced dead.
The cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner following an autopsy.
The Union County Sheriff’s Department says no foul play is suspected and that the ongoing SBI investigation is standard protocol when an inmate dies in custody.
