CHARLOTTE, NC — A motorcyclist was killed Wednesday afternoon after colliding with a tractor trailer and being run over by a dump truck.
The accident happened shortly before 4:30pm on South Tryon Street at General Drive. Investigators say 40-year-old Andre Williams was speeding north on South Tryon when his 2007 Yamaha motorcycle hit the right rear of a tractor trailer as the truck was turning left onto General Drive from the southbound lanes.
Witnesses tell police that Williams was going about 70mph in a 45mph zone when the crash occurred.
Williams was thrown from the motorcycle, according to reports, and the bike became wedge under the truck’s trailer. Officials say a Kenworth dump truck was also turning left onto General Drive and ran over Williams’ body in the roadway.
According to investigators, the tractor trailer driver was not aware that the bike was stuck or that the accident had happened until it dislodge while crossing the train tracks. Police say the driver then saw the bike in his rearview mirror and came to a stop.
The driver of the dump truck also says he did not see Williams lying in the road before he ran over him, but immediately pulled over when he realized what happened.
Investigators say excessive speed on Williams’ part was a contributing factor to the crash, but they do not yet know if impairment also played a role.
At this time, police say no charges have been filed.
