HILDEBRAN, NC — A second child critically injured in a Burke County accident Wednesday afternoon has died.
The accident happened around 1:40pm on Henry River Road, about half a mile south of I-40. Investigators with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol say a 1997 Buick Century and a 2006 Ford F-250 collided after the Buick crossed into oncoming traffic.
Troopers say 4-month-old Piper Myers and 17-month-old Adaline Hullette were in the backseat of the Buick when the accident occurred. Despite being properly secured in their child safety seats, investigators say the force of the impact ejected the seats and the children from the vehicle.
Piper was pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials, while her sister Adaline and father, Cody Myers, 21, were both airlifted with critical injuries.
Myers died at the hospital Wednesday evening, and his other daughter Adaline passed away the following day.
Officials say the driver of the Ford and a teen passenger only suffered minor injuries.
The investigation is ongoing.
