Young Charlotte Basketball Star Remembered at Balloon Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A young Charlotte basketball star is being remembered for his passion, energy, and love for the game. 18-year-old Mikey Maddox died after being hit by a car while riding a bicycle Saturday morning.

On the basketball court where he played nearly every day, those closest to Maddox gathered at Reedy Creek Park on Sunday night to remember him and release balloons in his honor.

“He had an influence on his teammates, he had an influence on his coaches, everybody he was around he touched them,” says Maddox’s former coach Jeff McInnis.

The teen played high school ball for Rocky River, Vance, and on travel teams.

“He’s one of the toughest kids that played for Team Charlotte, as far as the attitude of never backing down, competing every time you get on the court. He was one of the toughest kids we had,” McInnis explains.

Maddox died after being hit by a car on Old Concord Road.

Investigators say he was riding his bike in the road against traffic when the accident happened around 1:00 Saturday morning.

“Very friendly, like he’d meet anybody and click immediately,” says friend Tyesha Littlejohn.

Like so many others, Littlejohn met Mikey thru basketball. She says he was like a little brother to her.

“If you had to remember him one way, it would definitely be his smile, his personality, the way that he treated you,” Littlejohn says.

Friends also say Maddox was full of energy.

Former Rocky River teammate Darlinstone Dubar says he met him on the court.

“He was just in the gym, and I asked to play him 1-on-1 and kept beating me, and I wanted to play him again until I (won),” Dubar says.

Raquan Brown says Mikey was also known for his talent as an aspiring rap artist.

“He could play basketball, he could rap. If Mikey told me he could fly, I would believe it, that’s how great he was,” Brown says.

Investigators say the driver who hit Maddox stopped at the scene and was not driving impaired.

Police have not filed any charges and are still working to determine if speed was a factor in the crash.
