CLEVELAND COUNTY, NC — A Cleveland County deputy is recovering in the hospital after a man with a long criminal background allegedly shot him Tuesday night in the face and leg.
A family member says Deputy Tim Sims, a two-year veteran of the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office, is in good spirits while recovering in a Charlotte area hospital surrounded by family.
As for the alleged gunman, Dakota Greene, he is locked up on a $2 million bond.
Tom Addis has known the Sims family for more than 10 years and says, “Faith is keeping the family together.”
He says Deputy Sims, the soon to be father of twins, is holding up.
“The family is upbeat. His whole family from Tennessee and Georgia, they’re all there at the hospital. It’s a great support, the family is family oriented.”
Deputy Sims was shot in the face and thigh at KM Auto Broker along Highway 74 around 10:30 Tuesday night.
Investigators say the deputy confronted 23-year-old Dakota Greene after responding to a call about a suspicious person who may have been wanted on probation violations.
That’s when Greene reportedly opened fire.
Captain Jon Wright with the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office says, “The suspect turned around on him and without warning, shot him, twice.”
Deputy Sims shot back, hitting Greene’s car before he drove off, and stayed conscious until backup could arrive.
Wright says, “It was awful. The deputy, through his training and experience… just heart and drive… did exactly what we hope officers do in a situation.”
Investigators arrested Greene about three hours later in Cabarrus County.
WCCB spoke with Greene’s sister on the phone and she says her brother has a serious drug problem.
“Dakota has had a long, prolonged use of drugs and methamphetamine. The person that shot, Dakota, the person that shot the officer was not Dakota.”
Greene also has a lengthy arrest record.
Records show he just got out of prison in May. He served time for possession of stolen goods, and obtaining property by false pretense.
Wright says, “He just came out with the one thug that decided he wasn’t going back to prison.”
Bethel Baptist Church, where Deputy Sims’ father has been the pastor for more than 14 years, held its normal Wednesday night service, honoring Sims’ bravery.
WCCB has learned that there is body camera video of the shooting, and will be working to obtain that footage.
KM Auto Broker also has security cameras, but the owner says they were struck by lightening last week and not working.
