Neighbors in Dilworth Catch Prowlers on Camera

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Neighbors in Dilworth say they are fed up with prowlers trying to break-in to homes and cars.

New surveillance video shows the latest attempt, around 5:00 Sunday morning.

A man in a dark cap and t-shirt is seen pulling at car doors outside Byron Revels’ home.

The suspect seems to know there’s a camera, but doesn’t care, only briefly covering his face!

“So this has happened probably four or five times that I’ve caught on camera. But I know it’s happening much more frequently than that,” Revels says.

His neighbors along East Tremont Avenue in Dilworth are growing frustrated.

They say the prowlers seem to be getting bolder.

Just three weeks ago, someone targeted a house across the street from Revels and stole a truck the next street over.

Investigators haven’t caught that suspect but linked him to multiple home break-ins across South Charlotte.

“They’re starting to go in and look in your window, look in the window of your house. and if they see something of value that they can quickly kick in the door and grab, then they’ll do that,” Revels says.

And the prowlers don’t seem to care if people are asleep inside.

“I have reason to believe too, that it’s pretty organized, because one of the guys I caught, as he was exiting the driveway, he flashed a light, and it signaled a car down the road that sped up to pick him up,” Revels says.

Dilworth resident Ashley Shapiro says she’s heard about the break-ins.

“It’s a little bit scary. But I try to be prepared and aware of everything going on,” she says.

She thinks these crimes indicate bigger issues that need to be addressed.

“Thinking as a community, what can we do to help our neighbors who might be feeling like they might have to resort to that,” she says.

Neighbors have shared the latest surveillance video with CMPD.
