Are School Dress Codes Necessary?
One Texas high school’s dress code video goes off track and ends with an apology from the principal.
Students at Marcus High School in Flower Mound, TX slammed that video as sexist, because it only depicts girls breaking the rules.
The video shows several teen girls walking through the school’s halls in shorts, before the girls are confronted by a teacher.
The teacher takes the girls to a dress code violators room, which is filled with only other girls.
Another teacher instructs the girls, “Repeat after me, I will not wear athletic shorts.”
That didn’t sit well with some students.
They say it shows a double standard in the student dress code and how society treats men and women.
The school’s principal sent a letter to parents admitting the video was a mistake.
He also met with the students who complained.
Meanwhile, a California school district has a solution to the dress code debate: let students wear what they want!
This year students in the Alameda Unified School District, which is near San Francisco, will be allowed to wear tube tops, pajamas, miniskirts and sweatpants.
Some were frustrated with dress code rules, so the district is leaving it up to students and parents to decide what’s appropriate.
