Travel Concerns Grow As Labor Day Weekend, Rush Hour And A Presidential Visit Hit Charlotte Friday

CHARLOTTE, NC — Expect bumper-to-bumper traffic in Charlotte Friday afternoon at rush hour, a holiday weekend and a visit from the President converge on the city. Officials say there will be major delays.

The NC Highway Patrol says there will be traffic backups around Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. Trooper Ray Pierce says drivers should definitely avoid the interstates and take side roads if possible.

β€œIf you do not have to be in the downtown Charlotte triad area between 1pm and 7pm, by all means, you might want to avoid the Charlotte area,” says Trooper Pierce.

The White House says President Trump will sign an executive order on retirement security around 2 pm at Central Piedmont Community College’s Harris Conference Center. He will then head to Carmel County Club to help raise money for Republican Ninth District candidate Mark Harris and 13th District Representative Ted Budd.

Because of the traffic delays, CMS officials say school bus drop-offs will probably be delayed.

Larry Rainey’s daughter goes to Myers Park High School, and he says the delay puts a major stress on him and his family.

“To not know exactly what time she’s going to get home, and then also she works. She is 16-years-old. That’s going to be another issue, how do I get an Uber to her in order to get her to work?” says Rainey.

If you plan on flying, airport officials say to check the status of your flight before heading to the airport. Flights could be affected because of restrictions on air traffic when Air Force One is taking off and landing.
